Academic Support Services

As an international student at Saint Mary’s University, you must register for courses each semester to stay on track with your program and maintain your study permit requirements. Be sure to review course selection guidelines, important deadlines, and any prerequisites before enrolling. 

Academic Advisors at Saint Mary’s University provide guidance to help you navigate your program requirements, course selection, and academic planning. They can assist with degree progression, registration questions, and understanding university policies. Peer Success Coaches are experienced students who provide guidance and support to help you achieve your academic and personal goals. They offer advice on study strategies, time management, and university life, helping you adjust to the academic expectations at Saint Mary’s University. The Fred Smithers Centre at Saint Mary’s University offers a range of services to support students with disabilities and diverse learning needs. From academic accommodations and assistive technology to personalized support, the Centre helps ensure that all students have equal access to education. 

offers free academic support tailored to meet the diverse needs of both undergraduate and graduate students, benefiting international students in particular. Services include academic language support, workshops on essential learning strategies and specialized programs like JumpStart, which helps students prepare for the academic year by introducing them to university expectations. 

A key resource within the Learning Studio is , which provides free support to help students strengthen their academic writing, critical thinking, and communication skills. The Writing Centre has an EAL/ESL specialist who offers tutoring in academic writing, speaking, and test preparation for TOEFL and IELTS. It also provides assistance with linguistic research and thesis writing. Students can visit the Writing Centre in Burke 115 to chat with a tutor, book an appointment, or access resources. Online support is also available. 

Career and Experiential Learning Support Resources

Career and Experiential Learning (CEL) at Saint Mary’s University is dedicated to helping students explore career options, build professional skills, and connect with employers. From resume writing and interview preparation to job search strategies and networking opportunities, CEL provides the tools and support needed to succeed in the job market. Take advantage of workshops, career fairs, and one-on-one advising to prepare for a successful career after graduation.  

The INC Program provides senior-level international students with skills, knowledge, and experience to help them become successful employees in the Canadian workplace after graduation. Following recruitment in Summer/Fall, INC participants meet regularly between October and March to learn about Canadian work culture, career exploration, and job search. Our participants also volunteer at local businesses and organizations throughout the school year as part of the program.

Work while you study

As an international student, your study permit may allow you to work while you study, providing opportunities to gain valuable experience. Work opportunities include both on-campus and off-campus employment, depending on your study permit conditions. 

  • On-campus work is permitted without a separate work permit, but you must be enrolled full-time at a designated learning institution (DLI). 
  • Off-campus work may be allowed if your study permit includes the necessary conditions.

Post-Graduate Work Permits 

The (PGWP) allows you to work in Canada after completing your studies. This is an open work permit, meaning you can work for any employer and gain valuable Canadian experience. Visit   the ISC's Visa and Study Permit Advising page for information on PGWP application help.
